Holistic tips for your skin and body from Tzeira Sofer – practitioner in healing arts, expert on women’s health & wellness and founder of Pomega5.

Eliminate hydrogenated oils (such as corn, coconut, palm and soy oils) from your diet and skincare and instead incorporate beneficial essential fatty acids for better health.

Choose a healthy organic olive oil when preparing foods.

Incorporate products with Omega5s (pomegranate seed oil) and cold pressed Omega3s (almond and argan oil) into your skincare regime. They will help balance and nourish skin and because Omega5 is a dry oil, it will never leave skin feeling oily.

Remember to keep your skin hydrated, especially when exercising – Pomega5’s new Revitalizing Nourishing Toner offers an instant refreshener. Just mist it on skin throughout the day whenever you need a lift.

Stay away from sugary drinks such as juices and colas because they dehydrate skin. Drink lots of water instead.

Switch out your table salt for Himalayan salt instead. Unlike traditional table salt (sodium chloride) or salt used to cure and process deli meats (sodium nitrite), Himalayan salt is a pure intense mineral formula. Whereas sodium chloride and sodium nitrite cause fluid retention (which is particularly unseemly in the summer), Himalayan salt actually does the opposite - alkalizing the system and helping the body release unwanted toxins and fluids.

Apply cool cucumber slices to your eyes and potato slices to your face to absorb excess oil, calm, rehydrate and replenish minerals.

Wash away dirt and sweat 2 to 3 times a day with a pure, hydrating cleanser like Pomega5’s Cleansing Bar.

Consume lots of organic green and yellow vegetables and berries that contain purifying antioxidants for a healthier body.

If you’ve had a late night, first thing in the morning apply cool chamomile tea bags to eyes to reduce puffiness.

It’s important to remember that your skin is a giant organ, and just like the heart or lungs, you need to take care of your skin to ensure it performs at it’s peak. When your skin is healthy, you feel better and look younger. You also work to prevent more serious illnesses such as skin cancer. The fifty tips below will help you improve your skin and keep it healthy no matter if you are fifteen or sixty-five.

Protection from the Sun

Surely everyone has heard of the damaging effects the sun has on skin. The next time you walk outside, keep in mind that whether it’s cloudy or sunny, the sun is reaching your skin. Follow these steps to make sure you keep your skin safe and healthy.

Sunscreen. Protect your skin from the sun. Apply sunscreen every time you go out in the sun, even in the winter. Find a good quality sunscreen that will not add unnecessary oils to your skin.

Lips. Don’t forget your lips, too. Lipstick or balm with SPF will keep your lips in good shape, especially if it is of the glossy variety.

Cover up. Cover your arms and legs with lightweight clothes in the summer, and remember to apply sunscreen underneath. Also, find some fun hats to wear. Not only will you be protecting your skin, but you can make a fashion statement as well.

Stay in. Stay out of direct sunlight from 10 am to 3 pm. This is when the sunlight is at it’s peak and can do the most damage to your skin.

Sunglasses. The skin around our eyes is very sensitive. That’s where crow’s feet begin to show, too. Wear sunglasses when you go outside for added protection to that sensitive area.

Head. Your scalp gets a direct hit from the sun all the time. If putting sunscreen on it isn’t an option, then wear some type of covering like a wide-brimmed hat or scarf to protect it from the sun.

After-sun care. Just in case you forgot to protect your skin and got a little too much sun, be sure to apply an after-sun product to your skin. Something as simple as aloe vera straight from the plant will do, or get creative and make one of these soothing lavender after-sun ointments.

Tanning beds. Keep in mind that tanning beds emit the same UV light that the sun does, so they are not a safer alternative to being in the sun. If you feel you must use a tanning bed, then apply sun screen just as you would if you planned to be in the sun.

Skin Care

Taking care of your skin with a simple routine each day will take you far in achieving healthy skin. In addition to the daily care, being aware of how to treat your skin with TLC and knowing what to avoid will ensure your skin is in top shape. Take these suggestions for radiant skin.

Wash. Wash your face in the morning and in the evening. Washing removes dead skin cells plus all the dirt and debris from the day.

Moisturize. Depending on your skin type, use an appropriate moisturizer. Moisturizing hydrates your skin, adding elasticity and preventing wrinkles. Be careful not to over-moisturize, though, or you may end up with clogged pores.

Not just the face. Don’t forget to take care of other body parts. Elbows, knees, and feet need special attention too. A quick slather of moisturizer will keep these areas in shape.

Don’t touch. Keeping your hands off your face will help keep blemishes at bay. Resting your hands on your chin transfers oils to your face that can create clogged pores. Also, don’t pick at those pimples. Add a treatment product and leave it alone.

Hair. Your hair has oils on it, so when your hair is constantly touching your face, it is transferring those oils. Keep your hair back or find a new cut that features your face front and center.

Simple makeup. Don’t layer makeup on your face. Keep it down to one simple product, if any at all. If you feel you must wear makeup, choose one that is oil-free.

Fresh makeup. Throw away any makeup that is older than a year. Use fresh sponges and applicators so that you aren’t using old ones full of bacteria and dirt.

Bath oil. Soak in a tub with homemade bath oil. Bath oils with natural oils work best as they naturally hydrate and nourish your skin.

Pedicure. Pedicures aren’t just nail care, but entire foot care. Soaking, sloughing, and moisturizing the feet results in healthier feet and a relaxing experience overall.

Hot showers. While a really hot shower can certainly feel great, it is not so good for your skin. The hot water mixed with chlorine creates a chemical reaction that damages your skin. Keep your showers and baths warm, not hot, and you’ll be doing your skin a favor.

Healthy Living

The way you live your life has an impact on your skin. Taking the time to change a few steps in your life can keep not only your skin, but your entire body feeling its best. Here are some ways to make that happen.

Stress. While you might not think of stress as being particularly hard on your skin, reducing stress will keep your whole body healthy, help you sleep better, and eat better. Taking steps to a less stressful life will keep your skin healthy too.

Sleep. While getting a good night’s sleep doesn’t directly affect your skin, a chronic lack of sleep will create more stress and slow down circulation, which will result in less healthy looking skin. A poor night’s sleep can also contribute to puffy eyes in the morning.

Exercise. Exercise promotes blood flow, which keeps your skin looking healthy. It also promotes skin tone and elasticity.

Weight. Keeping a constant weight is better for your skin. Continually losing and gaining large amounts of weight causing sagging and promotes wrinkles.

Meditation. Taking just a few minutes each day to sit quietly and clear your mind helps reduce stress and gain focus and clarity. Read how meditation works. Take up this practice and watch your stress dissolve into healthier skin.

Cooking. When you cook your food, be sure not to overcook it. Overcooking takes the beneficial vitamins and minerals out of the food, thereby reducing what you put in your body. This prevents you from getting the best nutrition to your skin and your body as a whole.

Yoga breathing. The deep, relaxing form of breathing used during yoga practice can bring benefits to your skin as well. Not only will this deep breathing serve as a form of relaxation, it also oxygenates the body, which improves circulation, which in turn improves skin tone.

Spa treatment. Getting a professional massage with beneficial oils is good for your skin, but add to that the benefits of a body wrap or a facial, and you are really treating your skin right. While not everyone can afford a trip to the spa every month, you can save up for these special occasions and give yourself and your skin a wonderful gift.

What Goes In Your Body

What you put in your body has a direct effect on how your skin looks on the outside. Thinking twice before making those decisions about what you eat and drink can take you a long way to improving your skin’s health.

Water. Hydration is important to keep your skin supple and healthy. Remember the importance of water to your skin and keep yourself hydrated.

Smoking. This should be what doesn’t go in you. Smoking depletes your skin of oxygen and leaves it looking dull and wrinkled.

Diet. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables and a healthy, balanced diet. Putting good food into your body will leave your skin looking healthy on the outside of your body. Several foods will promote good skin health.

Vitamins. A regiment of daily vitamins is important for overall health. Some vitamins are especially good for promoting healthy skin (see the Supplements section below for more on those.)

Antioxidants. Eating food high in antioxidants is good for your skin. Antioxidants encourage skin cell repair and promote the continued production of collagen and elastin. This article on holistic skin care includes an excellent section explaining how antioxidants work and what foods have the most.

Alcohol. Drinking in moderation is always good advice, but it is also helpful for your skin. Alcohol dehydrates your body, thereby leaving your skin drier and more likely to wrinkle.

Digestion. Poor digestion is related to acne and other skin issues. Ensuring your digestion is working at its peak will ensure healthy skin. The best way to do this is by drinking lots of water and eating a diet high in fiber.

What Goes On Your Body

While some people just jump out of the shower and go in the morning, or grab the cheapest body lotion off the shelf, there are lots of natural and easy-to-use products that will keep your skin healthy and youthful. Try some of these fun ideas below.

Shea butter. Those who use shea butter on a regular basis swear by it’s amazing versatility and curative properties. It can be found in many beauty products or you can buy it pure from health stores.

Cucumber. Cut a few thin rounds of cucumber and place or gently rub them under your eyes to help remove unsightly dark circles.

Tea bags. Placing tea bags on your eyes can help eliminate dark circles and puffy eyes. Green tea, especially, can help with the puffiness as it contains an anti-inflammatory.

Exfoliate. Sloughing off dead skin cells brings a fresh glow to the skin all over your body. You can purchase an exfoliant or make one of your own like this strawberry sugar scrub. Remember to exfoliate in moderation to give your skin the most benefits.

Epsom salts. Have you ever soaked a sprained ankle in Epsom salts? That’s Reducing swelling is not the only thing they do. Use Epsom salts to detoxify, relax, and heal your skin. This is one of nature’s best curatives.

Coconut oil. Using this oil in its natural form moisturizes dry skin and helps healing. It also benefits dry hair. Even adding coconut oil to your diet can help your skin. Read more about this amazing oil in this article.

Healthy Ingredients. Make sure the products you are putting on your body are not harmful to your skin or your health in general. Read this list of potentially toxic ingredients. Keep it natural and your skin will be healthier.

Vitamin K. To aid in healing bruises, apply vitamin K to your skin. It also helps eliminate dark circles under your eyes and prevent wrinkles.

Mineral water. Splash some mineral water on your face. The mineral content in the water can reduce skin irritations and may help your skin absorb the moisture.

Avocado. These beauties work on the outside of your body as well as they do on the inside. Avocados work as an excellent moisturizer, help heal the skin, and can even reduce age spots. Here are some great ways to use avocados for your skin.

Supplements

Eating a healthy diet is definitely important to good skin care, but sometimes you can use a little extra boost in the nutrition department. The following supplements all promote healthy skin through either protecting or helping to repair it.

Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 EFAs promote skin repair and elasticity. They also balance the overabundance of omega-6 EFAs that is common in American diets. Read about omega-3 EFAs and other nutrients that help the skins. To boost your intake, salmon and flax seed oil will help.

Fish oil. Taking a fish oil supplement can help smooth wrinkles and clear up dry patches. It is also incredibly beneficial to the rest of your body. Choosing a high-quality fish oil will ensure the best results and eliminate any “fishy” taste from the supplement.

Vitamin A. Eating foods high in vitamin A helps your skin repair itself. Carrots, apricots, spinach, cantaloupe, and sweet potatoes are all good sources of vitamin A.

Vitamin E. Perhaps one of the most well-known skin supplements is vitamin E. Put topically on the skin and taken internally, the benefits of vitamin E are substantial. If you are looking for a quick snack, hazelnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, and olives are all excellent sources of vitamin E.

Vitamin C. Eating fruits and vegetables with lots of vitamin C will help keep wrinkles at bay. Those oranges and grapefruits are sure looking delicious right now.

Vitamin B complex. The B vitamin, biotin, builds healthy skin, hair and nails. Missing out on this can create skin irritations such as dermatitis. B vitamins work together to enhance the benefits of each, so find a good B complex to supplement your diet. Eating foods high in biotin such as oatmeal, bananas, tomatoes, and romaine lettuce will also help.

Selenium. This beneficial mineral has been found to reduce the chance of sunburn on the skin, slow down the aging process, and aid in the treatment of skin cancer. You can get selenium in a good multivitamin or by eating meats, seafood, brown rice, and Brazil nuts.

Amidst all the chaos surrounding Dr. Bronner’s recent lawsuit against several major industry players, Pomega5 remains unscathed and reaffirms its commitment to producing premium quality, efficacious products with the finest organic and biodynamic* ingredients available.

“We have never been big on flaunting the fact that we use organic and biodynamic ingredients”, explains Pomega5 founder Tzeira Sofer. “A growing number of companies that are clearly not making pure, clean products have been abusing the terms ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ so heavily that these words have become essentially meaningless. Slapping a certification label on our products would just make Pomega5 another face in the crowd when.”

For us, the use of such ingredients is already a given: The two new products in our line, Revitalizing Essential Moisture (a light day moisturizer made with pomegranate seed oil) and Revitalizing Nourishing Toner (made with blue cornflower and rose water), contain minimum 90% and 98% biodynamic and/or organic ingredients, but in reality, what really distinguishes the Pomega5 brand from others is the use of ingredients that are not only in harmony with each other and with nature, but are highly compatible with human skin.

Customers continue to see wonderful results with our products - not necessarily because the ingredients are organic - but because they have been formulated with extreme care.

We fuse complementary ingredients, such as verbena and lemongrass - which purify - with calendula, a calming agent, and pomegranate seed oil, a strong antioxidant that protects the skin from free-radical damage. Equally importantly, we refuse to use any of the parabens, fragrances, or synthetically-derived and harmful chemicals that are found in most products (even those that claim to be natural!). There is simply no need; nature already supplies us with thousands of miraculous substances that work as effectively.

Pomega’s commitment to customers extends beyond a USDA organic label, and we hope that as consumers continue to educate themselves about the available options, and companies are compelled to become more honest, the entire cosmetics industry will transform into one when where - as the Teens For Safe Cosmetics say - we won’t have to choose beauty over our own health.

The company that makes Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, a counterculture staple, sued many of its personal care competitors Monday over the validity of their organic labels as the once-quiet “green” cosmetic sector has soared in popularity, luring several Wall Street corporations into the field.

The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, accused 10 companies and two industry groups of selling and promoting soaps, lotions and other products that are manufactured using conventionally grown crops or chemicals derived from petroleum.

Dr. Bronner’s alleges that it’s unfair to label such products organic and is asking a judge to prevent Hain Celestial Group Inc., Estee Lauder Inc. and the other companies named in the lawsuit from doing so.

“There is widespread abuse of the word ‘organic’ throughout the industry and it’s spiraling out of control,” said company president David Bronner. “It’s an industry based on marketing and hype and the organic labels are a form of corrosive marketing.”

Bronner said a negotiated settlement before the lawsuit was filed broke down over some of the companies’ refusal to cut out the use of petrochemicals from products bearing organic labels.

But one of the two industry groups, Ecocert Inc., last week filed a pre-emptive lawsuit of its own against All One God Faith Inc., the company that makes Dr. Bronner’s soap. Ecocert is a French company that certifies products, including cosmetics, as “organic” according to European Union standards.

According to Ecocert’s lawsuit, also filed in San Francisco, Bronner threatened to drag the company through “the proverbial mud and to engage in widespread and negative publicity aimed at sullying” Ecocert if it refused to adopt more stringent certifying standards.

The Ecocert lawsuit asks a judge to essentially toss out Bronner’s lawsuit.

Many products use the petroleum-based chemicals to produce better suds in soap and shampoo. Bronner said the same effects can be achieved without the chemicals, but the manufacturing takes more time and money.

Bronner said business is booming at All One God Faith Inc., the name his grandfather dubbed the company 60 years ago. Since then, it has been churning out soap that caught on with hippies in the 1960s, yuppies in the 1980s and now the growing legions of natural food shoppers who flock to Whole Foods grocery stores and study product labels.

The company’s soap stands out for its quirky labels that are packed with minuscule musings from Marx and Mao, to Oprah Winfrey and Carl Sagan.

Bronner said the 50-employee company’s annual revenues increased 20 percent last year to $23 million and he expects similar growth this year. That’s why companies such as Estee Lauder, whose Aveda line was called into question in the lawsuit, and Hain Celestial are rushing to compete with their own versions of organic personal care products.

He said there are no formal organic labeling regulations for the personal care industry as there are for the food industry, which requires U.S. Department of Agriculture approval.

“We are long overdue for decisive action,” Organic Consumers Association director Ronnie Cummins said. “It’s very important that companies using labels that say organic are actually organic; otherwise they’ll degrade the whole organic notion.”

The Finland, Minn.-based association is backing Dr. Bronner’s lawsuit, which is essentially a false advertising and unfair business complaint filed under California’s unique “personal attorney general” statute.

Last month, the association released a study that showed 48 “natural” and “organic” soaps, shampoos and other products tested positive for a petrochemical.

Representatives for Hain Celestial Group and Aveda did not immediately return calls for comment Monday.

*The brands named in the case include Jason Natural, Avalon Organics, Nature’s Gate, Kiss My Face, Juice Organics, Giovanni, Head, Desert Essence, Ikove, Estee Lauder, Stella McCarney, as well as Ecocert and OASIS, two industry associations working to set standards for organics in personal care.

Pomegranates were popular in Biblical days and Greek mythology, and now they’re back in fashion, health-wise. Israeli doctors have discovered that this ancient fruit is a strong cancer-fighter.

On the heels of the discovery by Israeli researchers that pomegranate juice has antioxidant properties, another Israeli team has found that the fruit could have important implications for breast cancer treatment and estrogen replacement therapy.

The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology research team presented two studies at an international conference in June indicating that pomegranate seed oil triggers apoptosis — a self-destruct mechanism in breast cancer cells. Furthermore, pomegranate juice can be toxic to most estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells, while leaving normal breast cells largely unaffected. Estrogen is a hormone often prescribed to protect postmenopausal women against heart disease and osteoporosis.

“Pomegranates are unique in that the hormonal combinations inherent in the fruit seem to be helpful both for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer,” explains Dr. Ephraim Lansky, who headed the studies. “Pomegranates seem to replace needed estrogen often prescribed to protect postmenopausal women against heart disease and osteoporosis, while selectively destroying estrogen-dependent cancer cells.”

Dr. Martin Goldman, a New York-based board certified internist and life medicine specialist, notes, “This is apparently a safe substance that coud be helpful to many people, especially women at high-risk for developing breast cancer.”(1)

Other research has shown that pomegranate juice is helpful in oxygenating the heart of heart disease patients (American Journal of the College of Cardiology, Sept. 2005), combatting erectile dysfunction (Journal of Urology, July 2005), fighting prostate cancer (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Sept. 26, 2005); and scientists at Case Western Reserve University have reported that tissue cultures of human cartilage cells respond to pomegranate extract. Inflammation is reduced and the enzymes that break down cartilage become less active (Journal of Nutrition, Sept. 2005). (2)

We’ve been receiving many questions lately about the containers we use for our Healing Cream and Revitalizing Essential Moisture. Some of you undoubtedly remember our old glass jar, and a few have even asked that we bring it back! It’s time we laid out an explanation:

Because our goal is to provide the most natural and efficacious products possible without the addition of chemicals, artificial ingredients, fillers, and paraben preservatives, we opted to repackage the Pomega5 Healing Cream in a revolutionary air-tight pump bottle. Along with a unique, patent-pending botanical preservative system, this new container helps preserve the product naturally. Very few products on the market are able to achieve this stability without the assistance of traditional paraben preservatives. The state-of-the-art design keeps air out - preventing oxidation that can shorten the shelf-life of a product - and keeping it clean and fresh. Best of all, with each pump of the bottle, you get the perfect measured dose every time!

We realize, however, that glass is a much safer and ecologically-sustainable material than plastic. We are continuing to research alternative containers, but the reality is that it is difficult to source a glass pump jar that is air-tight and able to preserve the product’s freshness for a period of time without parabens. If you have any ideas or leads, by all means send them our way!

There is a common misconception that if you have acne or any kind of T-zone combination, you should stay away from moisturizers that are oil-rich and instead dry the skin with products containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. The truth is quite the opposite. While at times these chemicals can be beneficial, in general, dealing with oily skin is a question of balancing its acidity. Traditionally, most companies have used coconut, sunflower or palm oils in their products, all of which are not suitable oils for skin (or really for ingestion, but that’s another blog entirely). These molecules clog the pores, contributing to acne and the oily condition that develops with certain people. The reality is that when skin is oily, it is due to a lack of something, not an over-abundance of oil.

If you supply your skin with Omega 5 unsaturated fatty acid (pomegranate seed oil) that is able to penetrate the cell of the skin - in combination with very mild essential oils and botanicals to do the cleansing - your skin is going to be balanced and far less oily, even if you use something that is 70% oil. The revolutionary idea here is that it is the KIND of oils and agents you are using that matters. It is time we disregarded the simplistic and generalized ideology that oil = oily skin and no oil = non-oily skin. As we are all getting to know, the world is far more nuanced than this, and we have much to learn about what it is that our bodies truly need.
